It decides who gets to be at the top and enjoy the lion\u2019s share of the traffic, and who gets regulated to the dark corners of the web \u2014 a.k.a. the 2nd and so on pages of the search results.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most significant system of our digital world. And how that system works has been largely a mystery for years, but no longer. The Google search document leak, just went public just yesterday, drops thousands of pages of purported ranking algorithm factors onto our laps.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Leak<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s some debate as to whether the documentation was \u201cleaked,\u201d or \u201cdiscovered.\u201d But what we do know is that the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hexdocs.pm\/google_api_content_warehouse\/0.4.0\/api-reference.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">API documentation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was (likely accidentally) pushed live on GitHub\u2014 where it was then found.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The thousands and thousands of pages in these documents, which appear to come from Google\u2019s internal Content API Warehouse, give us an unprecedented look into how Google search and its ranking algorithms work.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fast Facts About the Google Search API Documentation<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Reported to be the internal documentation for Google Search\u2019s Content Warehouse API.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The documentation indicates this information is accurate as of March 2024.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2,596 modules are represented in the API documentation with 14,014 attributes. These are what we might call ranking factors or features, but not all attributes may be considered part of the ranking algorithm.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The documentation did not provide how these ranking factors are weighted.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And here\u2019s the kicker: several factors found on this document were factors that Google has said, on record, they didn\u2019t track and didn\u2019t include in their algorithms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">invaluable<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the SEO industry, and undoubtedly something that will direct how we do SEO for the foreseeable future.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is The Document Real?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another subject of debate is whether these documents are legitimate. On that point, here\u2019s what we know so far:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The documentation was on GitHub and was briefly made public from March to May 2024.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The documentation contained links to private GitHub repositories and internal pages \u2014 these required specific, Google-credentialed logins to access.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The documentation uses similar notation styles, formatting, and process\/module\/feature names and references seen in public Google API documentation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ex-Googlers say documentation similar to this exists on almost every Google team, i.e., with explanations and definitions for various API attributes and modules.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No doubt Google will neither deny nor confirm that this is their work. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But all signs, so far, point to this document being the real deal, though I still caution everyone to take everything you learn from it with a grain of salt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>UPDATE<\/strong>: On May 29, 2024, a Google spokesperson gave the <a href=\"https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/google-responds-to-leak-documentation-lacks-context-442705\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">following statement<\/a> to Search Engine Land&#8217;s Barry Schwartz:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>We would caution against making inaccurate assumptions about Search based on out-of-context, outdated, or incomplete information. We\u2019ve shared extensive information about how Search works and the types of factors that our systems weigh, while also working to protect the integrity of our results from manipulation.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What We Learnt From The Google Search Document Leak<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With over 2,500 technical documents to sift through, the insights we have so far are just the tip of the iceberg. I expect that the community will be analyzing this leak for months (possibly years) to gain more SEO-applicable insights.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other articles have gotten into the nitty-gritty of it already. But if you\u2019re having a hard time understanding all the technical jargon in those breakdowns, here\u2019s a quick and simple summary of the points of interest identified in the leak so far:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google uses something called \u201cTwiddlers.\u201d These are functions that help rerank a page (think boosting or demotion calculations).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Content can be demoted for reasons such as SERP signals (aka user behavior) indicating dissatisfaction, a link not matching the target site, using exact match domains, product reviews, location, or sexual content.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google uses a variety of measurements related to clicks, including \u201c<span style=\"font-family: 'courier new', courier;\">badClicks<\/span>\u201d, \u201d<span style=\"font-family: 'courier new', courier;\">goodClicks<\/span>\u201d, \u201d<span style=\"font-family: 'courier new', courier;\">lastLongestClicks<\/span>\u201d and \u201d<span style=\"font-family: 'courier new', courier;\">unsquashedClicks<\/span>\u201d.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google keeps a copy of every version of every page it has ever indexed. However, it only uses the last 20 changes of any given URL when analyzing a page.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google uses a domain authority metric, called \u201c<span style=\"font-family: 'courier new', courier;\">siteAuthority<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google uses a system called \u201c<span style=\"font-family: 'courier new', courier;\">NavBoost<\/span>\u201d that has a module which uses click data for evaluating pages.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Google tracks which search result gets the longest click during each session.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google has a \u201csandbox\u201d that websites are segregated to, based on age or lack of trust signals. Indicated by an attribute called \u201c<span style=\"font-family: 'courier new', courier;\">hostAge<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">May be related to the last point, but there is an attribute called \u201c<span style=\"font-family: 'courier new', courier;\">smallPersonalSite<\/span>\u201d in the documentation. Unclear what this is used for.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google does identify entities on a webpage and can sort, rank, and filter them.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So far, the only attributes that can be connected to E-E-A-T are author-related attributes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google uses Chrome data as part of their page quality scoring, with a module featuring a site-level measure of views from Chrome (\u201c<span style=\"font-family: 'courier new', courier;\">chromeInTotal<\/span>\u201d)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The number, diversity, and source of your backlinks matter a lot, even if PageRank has not been mentioned by Google in years.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Title tags being keyword-optimized and matching search queries is important.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: 'courier new', courier;\">siteFocusScore<\/span>\u201d attribute measures how much a site is focused on a given topic.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Publish dates and how frequently a page is updated determines content \u201cfreshness\u201d \u2014 which is also important.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Font size and text weight for links are things that Google notices. It appears that larger links are more positively received by Google.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Author\u2019s Note<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <em>This is not the first time a search engine&#8217;s ranking algorithm was leaked. I covered the <a href=\"https:\/\/seo-hacker.com\/yandex-hack\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Yandex hack and how it affects SEO<\/a> in 2023, and you&#8217;ll see plenty of similarities in the ranking factors both search engines use.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Action Points for Your SEO<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I did my best to review as much of the \u201cranking features\u201d that were leaked, as well as the original articles by<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/sparktoro.com\/blog\/an-anonymous-source-shared-thousands-of-leaked-google-search-api-documents-with-me-everyone-in-seo-should-see-them\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rand Fishkin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/ipullrank.com\/google-algo-leak\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mike King<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. From there, I have some insights I want to share with other SEOs and webmasters out there who want to know how to proceed with their SEO.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Links Matter \u2014 Link Value Affected by Several Factors\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Links <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">still <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">matter. Shocking? Not really. It\u2019s something I and other SEOs have been saying, even if link-related guidelines barely show up in Google news and updates nowadays.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, we need to emphasize link diversity and relevance in our off-page SEO strategies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some insights from the documentation:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PageRank of the referring domain\u2019s homepage (also known as Homepage Trust) affects the value of the link.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indexing tier matters. Regularly updated and accessed content is of the highest tier, and provides more value for your rankings.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you want your off-page SEO to actually <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">do<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> something for your website, then focus on building links from websites that have authority, and from pages that are either fresh or are otherwise featured in the top tier.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some PR might help here \u2014 news publications tend to drive the best results because of how well they fulfill these factors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for guest posts, there\u2019s no clear indication that these will hurt your site, but I definitely would avoid approaching them as a way to game the system. Instead, be discerning about your outreach and treat it as you would if you were networking for new business partners.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Aim for Successful Clicks\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fact that clicks <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a ranking factor should not be a surprise. Despite what Google\u2019s team says, clicks are the clearest indicator of user behavior and how good a page is at fulfilling their search intent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google\u2019s whole deal is providing the answers you want, so why <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wouldn\u2019t <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they boost pages that seem to do just that?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The core of your strategy should be creating great user experiences. Great content that provides users with the right answers is how you do that. Aiming for qualified traffic is how you do that. Building a great-looking, functioning website is how you do that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Go beyond just picking clickbait title tags and meta descriptions, and focus on making sure users get what they need from your website.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Author\u2019s Note<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <em>If you haven\u2019t been paying attention to page quality since the concepts of E-E-A-T and the HCU were introduced, now is the time to do so. Here\u2019s my<\/em><\/span><em> <a href=\"https:\/\/seo-hacker.com\/helpful-content-update\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">guide to ranking for the HCU<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to help you get started.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h3><b>Keep Pages Updated<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Content freshness is something that Google looks for, based on the attributes &#8220;<span style=\"font-family: 'courier new', courier;\">bylineDate<\/span>,&#8221; &#8220;<span style=\"font-family: 'courier new', courier;\">syntacticDate<\/span>,&#8221; and &#8220;<span style=\"font-family: 'courier new', courier;\">semanticDate<\/span>,&#8221; which are the dates in the byline, URL, and on-page content, respectively.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aside from that, an interesting click-based measurement is the \u201clast good click.\u201d All these being in a module related to indexing signals suggests that outdated pages and content decay can affect your rankings.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be vigilant about which pages on your website are not driving the expected amount of clicks for its SERP position. Outdated posts should be audited to ensure content has up-to-date and accurate information to help users in their search journey.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This should revive those posts and drive clicks, preventing content decay.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s especially important to start on this if you have content pillars on your website that aren\u2019t driving the same traffic as they used to.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Establish Expertise &amp; Authority\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google does notice the entities on a webpage, which include a bunch of things, but what I want to focus on are those related to your authors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">E-E-A-T as a concept is pretty nebulous \u2014 because scoring \u201cexpertise\u201d and \u201cauthority\u201d of a website and its authors <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> nebulous. So, a lot of SEOs have been skeptical about it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the presence of an \u201cauthor\u201d attribute combined with the in-depth mapping of entities in the documentation shows there is some weight to having a well-established author on your website.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, apply author markups, create an author bio page and archive, and showcase your official profiles on your website to prove your expertise.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Build Your Domain Authority<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After countless Q&amp;As and interviews where statements like \u201cwe don\u2019t have anything like domain authority,\u201d and \u201cwe don\u2019t have website authority score,\u201d were thrown around, we find there <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">does <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exist an attribute called \u201c<span style=\"font-family: 'courier new', courier;\">siteAuthority<\/span>\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though we don\u2019t know specifically how this measure is computed, and how it weighs in the overall scoring for your website, we know it does matter to your rankings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, what do you need to do to improve site authority? It&#8217;s simple \u2014 keep following best practices and white-hat SEO, and you should be able to grow your authority within your niche.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Stick to Your Niche<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speaking of niches \u2014 I found the \u201c<span style=\"font-family: 'courier new', courier;\">siteFocusScore<\/span>\u201d attribute interesting. It appears that building more and more content within a specific topic is considered a positive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;<span style=\"font-family: 'courier new', courier;\">siteRadius<\/span>&#8221; attribute, which measures how far &#8220;<span style=\"font-family: 'courier new', courier;\">page_embeddings<\/span>&#8221; deviate from &#8220;<span style=\"font-family: 'courier new', courier;\">site_embedding<\/span>,&#8221; also point towards topical authority being a ranking factor.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Author\u2019s Note:<\/strong> <em>Embeddings in this context is something that machines use to understand the semantics and correlation between words used on a page<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s something other SEOs have hypothesized before. After all, the more you write about a topic, the more you <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">must<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> be an authority on that topic, right?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But anyone can write tons of blogs on a given topic nowadays with AI, so how do you stand out (and avoid the risk of sounding artificial and spammy?)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s where author entities and link-building come in. I do think that great content should be supplemented by link-building efforts, as a sort of way to show that hey, \u201cI\u2019m an authority with these credentials, and these other people think I\u2019m an authority on the topic as well.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Key Takeaway<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of the insights from the Google search document leak are things that SEOs have been working on for months (if not years). However, we now have solid evidence behind a lot of our hunches, providing that our theories are in fact best practices.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">biggest<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> takeaway I have from this leak: <\/span><b>Google relies on user behavior (click data and post-click behavior in particular) to find the best content.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Other ranking factors supplement that. Optimize to get users to click on and then stay on your page, and you should see benefits to your rankings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Could Google remove these ranking factors now that they\u2019ve been leaked? They could, but it\u2019s highly unlikely that they\u2019ll remove vital attributes in the algorithm they\u2019ve spent years building.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So my advice is to follow these now validated SEO practices and be <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">very<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> critical about any Google statements that follow this
