Let\u2019s go over the key points of this update, what to do with unhelpful content, and how to create more valuable content in the future.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Key Points on the September 2023 Helpful Content Update<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This update started rolling out on September 14th. Here\u2019s what we know so far:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Purpose<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Evaluates which content was made for rankings, rather than to help users.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Scope<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Only affects results on Google Search and Google Discover.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Penalty<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Google has not officially mentioned a penalty. However, your rankings may be negatively affected by this update.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Scale<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: It is a sitewide algorithm update, so it will affect your website as a whole, rather than just a few pages.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Impact<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: No official announcement as to the percentage of searches that were impacted by the Helpful Content Update.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Languages: Affects all languages.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Recovery<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Requires a holistic review of your website\u2019s content. With ongoing rollout and refreshes, it may take time for your rankings to settle, as well as a few more weeks to recover from this update.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Notable Changes to the Official Helpful Content Page<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google has a page all about the Helpful Content Update, which you can read <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/search\/updates\/helpful-content-update\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It has recently been updated, which provides more points of consideration if you\u2019re looking to recover from it.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Added new guidelines on hosting third-party content.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Added suggestions on what webmasters can do after the Helpful Content Update.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Added new considerations on removing content and changing publishing dates.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The last change is especially interesting. In the previous version of the page, Google wrote:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google Search&#8217;s <\/span><\/i><b><i>helpful content system<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> generates a signal used by our automated ranking systems to better ensure people see original, helpful content written by people, for people, in search results. This page explains more about how the system works, and what you can do to assess and improve your content.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now it reads:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google Search&#8217;s <\/span><\/i><b><i>helpful content system<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> generates a signal used by our automated ranking systems to better ensure people see original, helpful content created for people in search results. This page explains more about how the system works, and what you can do to assess and improve your content.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">See the difference? They removed the words &#8220;written by people&#8221; \u2014 which could mean that they are now officially considering that AI-written or augmented content may be helpful to users.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s something I mentioned months ago when I covered how <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/seo-hacker.com\/google-detect-ai-generated-content\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google can detect AI-generated content<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014even though they can tell when you use AI, it doesn\u2019t automatically think it\u2019s bad. But you do have to be careful about <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you use it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I cannot stress this enough: <\/span><b>do not use AI just to generate tons of content to rank<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. You need to ensure the content is of quality and input your expertise to make it unique <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> valuable to users (i.e., making sure it has a human touch.)<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to Recover from the September 2023 Helpful Content Update<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The answer lies in its name: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Helpful <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Content Update. To recover, you need to consider if your content, as it is now, is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">helpful<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the users that read it. If it isn\u2019t then you need to follow this strategy:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Review your keywords.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Are you targeting the right keywords for your business? If not, it\u2019s time to find better ones.
