Our carefully crafted title tags were being replaced, and not a lot of people were thrilled. The hypothesis is that Google\u2019s Page Title Update was to blame, so let\u2019s talk about what we know so far.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica;\"><!--more--><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: helvetica;\">What is Google\u2019s August 2021 Page Title Update?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica;\">On August 24, 2021, Google informed the public of a new system that can <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/search\/blog\/2021\/08\/update-to-generating-page-titles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">generate titles for website pages<\/a>. According to the article released, the new system will focus more on accurately describing what a page is about rather than adapting to the query posed by the searcher.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica;\">So, how will it do that? In the same announcement, Google noted down some factors that the new system will take into consideration when it creates a title tag. Some of these include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica;\">the HTML text<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica;\">the main visual title or headline<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica;\">header tags<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica;\">prominent content made with style treatments<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica;\">Although the new system has gone live on the SERPs, Google\u2019s recommendation to site masters is to still ensure that they create good HTML title tags. Out of all of the factors, Google approximates that 80% of the time title tags will be the basis of the generated titles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica;\">Now that you know more about the Page Title Update, let\u2019s talk about what happened when the new system went live.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: helvetica;\">Impact on search results<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica;\">Last week, multiple webmasters spoke up about the new title tags that were being generated for their pages. Some are even calling it the &#8220;titlepocalypse.&#8221; The cause of frustrations was mostly the inaccuracy of the title tags being created by the new system. This has led to drops in traffic and the CTR of affected pages, which is a good cause of concern for any website owner.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica;\">Here are just a few examples of the concerns people had with the new title tags generated by Google\u2019s page title update.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-family: helvetica;\">Copy is not found on the page<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica;\">One common concern is for title tags created from content not found on the page. Take a look at what happened to our landing page for the keyword \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/seo-hacker.com\/seo-philippines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SEO Philippines<\/a>\u201d on Google. The HTML title tag we placed directly matched the keyword, but Google\u2019s new page title system changed it to this.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-206334 size-full lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/seo-hacker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Google-Page-Title-Update-On-SEO-Hacker.jpg\"https:\/\/seo-hacker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Google-Page-Title-Update-On-SEO-Hacker.jpg\" alt=\"Google Page Title Update On SEO Hacker's LP\" width=\"584\" height=\"97\" data-wp-pid=\"206334\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/seo-hacker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Google-Page-Title-Update-On-SEO-Hacker.jpg 584w, https:\/\/seo-hacker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Google-Page-Title-Update-On-SEO-Hacker-300x50.jpg 300w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 584px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 584\/97;\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica;\">What\u2019s even more questionable is that if you look through the content, there is no mention of the phrase \u201cbest SEO in the Philippines\u201d either.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica;\">Other webmasters have also experienced the same phenomenon, with some noticing that the title tags were generated from the anchor texts of internal and external links. The problem with this is that they may not be able to completely summarize what a page is about.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-family: helvetica;\">Informal capitalizations<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica;\">Notice anything else in the example above? That\u2019s right, the informal capitalization. Web owners have also been sharing screenshots of their newly generated title tags having different capitalizations. With Your Money or Your Life (YMYL) content, accuracy is crucial as the information can affect people\u2019s health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica;\">One of the examples going around is the changing of pages from the UK\u2019s National Health Service website. In a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/danbarker\/status\/1430555303586803716\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">series of tweets by Dan Barker<\/a>, he showcased the occurrence originally spotted by SEO consultant Jenny Hearn on the website\u2019s page about the flu.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-206332 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/seo-hacker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/NHS-Flu-Page-Content.jpg\"https:\/\/seo-hacker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/NHS-Flu-Page-Content.jpg\" alt=\"NHS Flu Page Content\" width=\"600\" height=\"554\" data-wp-pid=\"206332\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/seo-hacker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/NHS-Flu-Page-Content.jpg 600w, https:\/\/seo-hacker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/NHS-Flu-Page-Content-300x277.jpg 300w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 600px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 600\/554;\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica;\">As you can see above, the page\u2019s search intent is quite informational. It talks about flu symptoms, how to treat it, how to avoid spreading it, and more. Multiple members of the community have spoken up about this inaccuracy and how it can be dangerous for searchers.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: helvetica;\">How Google is responding to concerns<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica;\">You may be wondering how Google responded to these concerns. First, they opened a thread where people can <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/webmasters\/thread\/122879386\/your-feedback-on-titles-shown-in-search-results\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">share their feedback on the new update<\/a>. All web owners are free to reply to it with screenshots as well as the URLs of their affected pages.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica;\">Secondly, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/dannysullivan\/status\/1428771284930818052?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Google\u2019s Danny Sullivan replied to some tweets\u00a0<\/a>suggesting a page in Google Search Console that will allow web owners to choose which pages they do not want to have automatic title tags.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica;\">Personally, I noticed that after a few days the title tags reverted to their initial state. Google must have seen the concerns of their community and gone back to the drawing board for this one.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: helvetica;\">Key takeaway<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica;\">All in all, whether you were affected by the update or not, it would still do your website well to have optimized HTML title tags.
