Note that all information and images presented on this blog post are sourced from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.projectveritas.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Project Veritas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/seo-hacker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Google-Document-Dump.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-17341 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/seo-hacker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Google-Document-Dump-1024x469.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"469\" data-wp-pid=\"17341\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1024px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1024\/469;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s hard to say if these leaked documents are authentic or not. There are more than 900 files and most of them are screenshots of emails between Google employees with no context at all. Some documents are slides that seem to be made for internal presentations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the news sounds juicy, there is not a lot to be excited about these documents. For the SEO industry, a lot of useful information here might already make sense. Here are some highlights of the documents.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fake News<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the main purpose of the \u2018leak\u2019 was to expose Google for having political biases and hidden agendas, some of them actually make Google look good. In the \u2018Fake News\u2019 folder, there is a list of websites that are blacklisted from appearing in Google Now, a feature of the Google Search app for android and iOS phones which was phased out in 2016. Other documents include information on Google\u2019s fight against disinformation or fake news.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/seo-hacker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Google-Now-Blacklist.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-17342 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/seo-hacker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Google-Now-Blacklist.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"731\" data-wp-pid=\"17342\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 720px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 720\/731;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is no surprise at all. Even though most of these documents are from 2016, I wouldn\u2019t be surprised if Google is still implementing most of these or probably improve their policies on fake news. While this document is for Google Now, I would say there is a possibility that they are using this for Google Discover and Google News if this was authentic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One more notable document from this folder is the diagram of the Google News Ecosystem that shows the process of being verified news publication in the search engine. It indicates that Google receives 4,000 applications a month to be a news publisher but only 18-25% are approved.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/seo-hacker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/News-Ecosystem.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-17343 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/seo-hacker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/News-Ecosystem.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"959\" height=\"542\" data-wp-pid=\"17343\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 959px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 959\/542;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manual Actions for Websites in Google News<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another document that was in the Fake News folder is a document on integrating the WebSpam manual actions to the Google News Corpus. The WebSpam team is Google\u2019s hand in handling reports on spam, paid links, and malware.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/seo-hacker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/WebSpam-and-Gnews.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-17345 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/seo-hacker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/WebSpam-and-Gnews.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"766\" height=\"326\" data-wp-pid=\"17345\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 766px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 766\/326;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is indicated in the document that domains that received manual actions from the WebSpam team will automatically be prevented from showing in Google News or be permanently removed. Penalties were initially requested for multiple penalties such as \u201cMobileAdRedirect, ClockingRedirect, SpammyUserContent, and HackedIsolated\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, Google News limited it to three penalties; Blackhat, Demotion, and Hack. Websites that are flagged with Blackhat and Demotion (bad content, scraping content for duplication, links) will completely be removed. For Hacked websites, temporary removal will be applied but will then be returned upon cleaning of the malware.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/seo-hacker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Gnews-removal-scope.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-17346 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/seo-hacker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Gnews-removal-scope.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"678\" height=\"593\" data-wp-pid=\"17346\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 678px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 678\/593;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Machine Learning Fairness<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As an AI company, Google relies heavily on machine learning in building its algorithms, data, and products. In these documents which are mostly dated 2017, it seems like Google knows that unfairness can or does occur in their algorithm and is advocating and investigating for change.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As defined in one of the documents, \u201calgorithmic unfairness\u201d means <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unjust or prejudicial treatment of people that is related to sensitive characteristics such as race, income, sexual orientation, or gender, through algorithmic systems or algorithmically aided decision-making.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In one of the documents, they mentioned that their goal is to \u201cArticulate the full range of algorithmic unfairness that can occur in products\u201d for further development of their tools and products.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the presentations shows how machine learning systems can pick up biases from data.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/seo-hacker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Machine-Learning-biases.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-17347 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/seo-hacker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Machine-Learning-biases.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"959\" height=\"542\" data-wp-pid=\"17347\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 959px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 959\/542;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Key Takeaway<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These \u2018leaked documents\u2019 are not yet authenticated by Google but it seems like there is nothing too alarming. While the motives of the Google Insider is to expose Google or its political biases, the documents are not at all surprising since Google is currently facing anti-trust issues.
