What is CTR?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Well, CTR is a shortened term for Click Through Rate and is a performance metric that measures the numbers of clicks a specific link gets divided by the number of impressions. However, in this article, I will focus on the latter!<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Why is Click Through Rate important for SEO?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As I mentioned, in the beginning, CTR is becoming more and more important in the SEO world, but why is that you\u2019re maybe wondering? Let me explain!<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Beyond the fact that Click Through Rate is an overall important metric to: <\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Analyze user intent<\/li>\n<li>Measure the quality of your copy<\/li>\n<li>Analyze the effectiveness of your call-to-action<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>CTR is also important to\u00a0<\/strong>boost your organic search positions<\/h3>\n<p>Something that people have suspected for a long time. Even back in 2013, a <span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.semrush.com\/blog\/click-through-rate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">blog post on SEMrush<\/a><\/span> stated that CTR is important for SEO because:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cYour website\u2019s ranking for a particular keyword on Google depends hugely on the number of inbound links. Yet, you should not forget the fact that Google also checks the searcher votes you get when someone clicks on your website in the search engine results to get through to your website. A combination of external votes and searcher votes would lead your website to the top of the rankings for a particular keyword. This would help you a great deal with its SEO.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>As well as:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cEvery marketer wants his\/her website to appear on the first page of the search results for the main keywords. However, even if your website is on the first page but not getting clicked on enough, Google has every reason to push you down the ladder. Sometimes, websites from the second and even third page of the search results manage to make it to the first page simply by having a higher click-through rate. Falling off the first page isn\u2019t exactly ideal for your SEO.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h2><strong>RankBrain and CTR<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>After the <span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2015-10-26\/google-turning-its-lucrative-web-search-over-to-ai-machines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">introduction of RankBrain<\/a><\/span> in late 2015, a new machine learning algorithm from Google, things changed and CTR became even more important. Something that a Google engineer called Paul Haahr confirmed when he showed this slide on a conference:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/seo-hacker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/rankbrain-and-ctr.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-15751 aligncenter lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/seo-hacker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/rankbrain-and-ctr-1024x545.png\" alt=\"rankbrain and ctr\" width=\"1024\" height=\"545\" data-wp-pid=\"15751\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1024px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1024\/545;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In other words, the slide is basically saying that the new algorithm sometimes ranks pages higher up then they \u201cshould\u201d rank. Also, if that page gets an above average Click Through Rate, Google could use that as a sign that the page should get a permanent ranking boost.<\/p>\n<p>To verify this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wordstream.com\/blog\/ws\/2016\/09\/26\/high-ctr-benefits\">WordStream conducted a test<\/a> to see whether or not an above average CTR would mean higher rankings. This is what they found:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/seo-hacker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/ctr-test.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-15756 aligncenter lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/seo-hacker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/ctr-test-1024x521.png\" alt=\"ctr test\" width=\"1024\" height=\"521\" data-wp-pid=\"15756\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1024px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1024\/521;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>In connection with this, they also stated that:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe more your pages beat the expected organic CTR for a given position, the more likely you are to appear in prominent organic positions. So, if you want to move up by one spot (e.g., Position 5 to Position 4) in Google&#8217;s SERP, you need to increase your organic CTR by 3 percent. If you want to move up again (e.g., Position 4 to Position 3), you&#8217;ll need to increase your CTR by another 3 percent.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h2><strong>How to increase your CTR<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The basics of increasing your Click Through Rate in the organic search is to make your page stick out from the crowd. Something that could be done by simply crafting flawless meta titles and descriptions.<\/p>\n<p>Even though a compelling copy is great, there\u2019s nowadays a lot of other things you could do to make your page stand out in the SERP and increase your CTR!<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Use review snippets to increase CTR<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A great way to make your page stand out from the rest of the SERP as well as making it more compelling for people to click on is by using review snippets:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/seo-hacker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/review-snippet.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-15758 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/seo-hacker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/review-snippet-1024x283.png\" alt=\"review snippet\" width=\"1024\" height=\"283\" data-wp-pid=\"15758\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1024px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1024\/283;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The review snippet has created a major stir in the SEO world the past years since people, like many other things in this space, started to abuse it. It all happened when more and more people started to realize that pretty much any site could achieve the review snippet by just adding the <span><a href=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/AggregateRating\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">aggregateRating schema markup<\/a><\/span> to their pages.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>(Hint: when I say that people started to add the aggregateRating schema markup to their pages I\u2019m not talking of a handful of pages. I\u2019m talking about every single one of them!)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For a long time, there\u2019s been a lot of unclear information on what triggers the review snippets to appear in the SERP. Now Google has made all of the heavy lifting, making a <span><a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/search\/docs\/data-types\/review\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">complete guide to the review snippets<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>In the guide they state that you could expect to see a review snippet when Google finds a valid review or rating markup for the following kind of content:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Local businesses<\/li>\n<li>Movies<\/li>\n<li>Books<\/li>\n<li>Music<\/li>\n<li>Products<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In supplement to using <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/search\/docs\/guides\/sd-policies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">structured data<\/a>, they also recommend you to follow these guidelines:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/seo-hacker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/review-snippet-guidelines.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-15753 aligncenter lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/seo-hacker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/review-snippet-guidelines.png\" alt=\"review snippet guidelines\" width=\"747\" height=\"504\" data-wp-pid=\"15753\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 747px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 747\/504;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Some people would probably also claim that it\u2019s possible to achieve review snippets by using third-party review software such as <span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.trustpilot.com\/\">TrustPilot<\/a><\/span>. Even though I\u2019ve also experienced this (at least on Swedish customers), I would recommend you to first follow the guidelines from big brother aka Google.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Use emojis to increase CTR<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Another creative way to increase your CTR is by using emojis in your meta title and description. Something that has received a lot of attention lately, not least due to <span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.semrush.com\/user\/148935233\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Garrett Mehrguth<\/a><\/span>\u2019s amazing article <span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.semrush.com\/blog\/increase-click-through-rate-emojis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">How to Increase Your Click Through Rate With Emojis<\/a><\/span> as of recently.<\/p>\n<p>Google has been experimenting with this for a long time. In fact, they first introduced the emojis in mobile SERPs in 2012, then <span><a href=\"https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/google-finally-drops-emojis-from-search-results-listings-page-223715\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pulled them all back in 2015<\/a><\/span> and then, as of the beginning of 2017, they <span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.digi-hub.net\/2017\/03\/emojis-theyre-finally-back-on-google-serps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">brought the emojis back<\/a><\/span>:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/seo-hacker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/emoji-in-serp.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-15752 aligncenter lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/seo-hacker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/emoji-in-serp.png\" alt=\"emoji in serp\" width=\"458\" height=\"100\" data-wp-pid=\"15752\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 458px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 458\/100;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As you can imagine, having one or several emojis in your meta title or description will make your page more compelling for people to click on. Though, there\u2019s no reason to start overuse them since Google will only display them in <span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.seroundtable.com\/emojis-google-search-snippets-23412.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">results where they are relevant, useful and fun<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, use them with care and try to think where they can be relevant, useful and fun since this will increase your chances of having the emoji showing up at all.
