SEO\u00a0strategies are constantly changing for the demands of search engines. Some strategies were really effective in the early 2000s, but nowadays they\u2019re not. In the same light, what is now effective may not be later on.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Updating strategies based on trends is the best practice I have ever experienced. From the mid-1990s, webmasters and content providers began to optimize their websites for search engines. And now, in 2014 we are still optimizing our websites but practice different strategies from before. In line with that, the evaluation process should also be changed to go along with it.<\/p>\n

Google\u2019s way of evaluating the SEO\u00a0of a website has dramatically changed over time. In fact, if we used the old processes, we won\u2019t be able to make value out of it. So, it is crucial to know the strategies that exist now, especially the latest algorithms.<\/p>\n

Some of us are not well aware – so as to make things clear, I have included 5 steps to evaluate SEO\u00a0effectiveness of a website.<\/p>\n

Step #1: Check Website Authority<\/h3>\n

Website authority means the strength of your website against others. In the SEO\u00a0industry, it is the combination of domain and page authority which are also called\u00a0Moz DA and PA.<\/p>\n

The authority by Moz is calculated between 1 to 100 points depending over 40 different signals. And here is a technical explanation of DA<\/a> and PA:<\/p>\n

Whereas Domain Authority measures the predictive ranking strength of the entire domains or subdomains, Page Authority measures the strength of individual page.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The DA and PA are the aggregate of 3 metrics:<\/p>\n

1. MozRank \u2013 It measures the link popularity.
\n2. MozTrust \u2013 It measures the link trust.
\n3. Link Profile \u2013 It measures the total link profile.<\/p>\n

By checking a website\u2019s Moz authority, we can get a quick evaluation\u00a0of how\u00a0the site is,\u00a0altogether. In fact, we may get a quick review of the site\u2019s link popularity, trust and profile too. With that, it certainly is a qualified choice.<\/p>\n

So just head over to\u00a0Moz\u2019s Open Site Explorer<\/a> and perform this checkup. In this case, a higher rate\u00a0means better authority. (For all analysis in this post, I will be using my new personal blog Blogging Spell<\/a>\ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

We can see it has a domain authority of 30\/100, and a page authority of 40\/100. This rate adequately show that the\u00a0site reviewed is quite new and not yet authoritative over search engines.<\/p>\n

Step #2: Check Social Signals<\/h3>\n

Social media platforms were not given that much importance a few years ago. Do you know why? Because everybody thought, they weren’t enough to deliver a valuable amount\u00a0of sales.<\/p>\n

All the search engines including Google and Bing are still using social signals to rank a website<\/a>. So those who opted to leave these platforms probably\u00a0missed\u00a0the sure fire chance to rank at the top.<\/p>\n

When I first heard that\u00a0Moz Beginner\u2019s Guide to SEO<\/em> ranked on the 4th position for the search query \u201cbeginner\u2019s guide\u201d<\/a>\u00a0–\u00a0just because of a tweet by Smashing Magazine – I was appalled.<\/p>\n

Since then, I have been a great fan of social media sites. Now that everyone has started to realize how effective these sites are, digging into the social signals will help let us know how a site is performing over the social media platforms.<\/p>\n

Signals\u00a0point out\u00a0a\u00a0website’s popularity – with the higher signals depicting more\u00a0popularity and recommendations\u00a0in the social media platforms and the ‘lower signal\u2019 shows less popular and possibly unrated by the audiences.<\/p>\n

There are lots of free sites to check social signals, but you can use Ahrefs<\/a>:<\/p>\n

Step #3: Check Traffic Ranks<\/h3>\n

A site without traffic is like a pool without water \u2013 it\u2019s nothing.<\/p>\n

Traffic rank is another great factor to determine a website’s success. A site with a huge number of daily visitors means it has something important. The visitors benefit\u00a0from\u00a0the website, otherwise they won\u2019t be going there daily.<\/p>\n

Traffic can reveal if a website is worth ranking or not. If you look into some popular websites, you will come to realize that they are also leading in the search engines.<\/p>\n

So the equation is: Higher Ranking = Higher Traffic.<\/p>\n

That is why we should leverage the traffic ranks to accurately evaluate a website. There are also three things to look for besides the traffic rank:<\/p>\n

1. Bounce Rate \u2013 Lower bounce rate is better for a website.
\n2. Search Visits \u2013 Higher search visits mean higher rankings in search engines.
\n3. Time Spend on Site \u2013 It will let you know how well the content is.<\/p>\n

No idea how to do this? You might\u00a0possibly know about Alexa<\/a>, Compete<\/a> and Quantcast <\/a>–\u00a0the top notch companies that record traffic data and count\u00a0ranks as well.<\/p>\n

\"How<\/a><\/p>\n

Step #4: Conduct a Link Audit<\/h3>\n

Backlinks are similar to votes. Whenever we love a website, we vote for it by creating\u00a0links that lead back to it. Meaning, the\u00a0total number of links equate to the\u00a0number of\u00a0people who\u00a0value\u00a0a website.<\/p>\n

Search engines always has its eyes on rank worthy websites. If the ranking process depended on a program, there may be difficulty in getting\u00a0correct and accurate decisions. In this case, when the program needs\u00a0help in\u00a0ranking the appropriate website, the backlinks will help finalize that decision.<\/p>\n

By conducting the link audit of a website, we will learn how much a website was appreciated through the number of links that managed to connect back to it – the more natural a link profile is, the more trustworthy the SEO job was done. After launching a link audit, focus on the\u00a0following\u00a0factors:<\/p>\n

1. Total Number of Links \u2013 The higher is always better.
\n2. Referring Pages \u2013 The higher is better, but it should be in a good ratio with referring domain.
\n3. Referring Domains \u2013 Higher is always better for this one. But high authoritative domains are the best.
\n4. Backlink Types \u2013 Nofollow and Dofollow both are good in a natural proportion.
\n5. Anchor Text Distribution \u2013 The most natural distribution is the best.<\/p>\n

How do we do that? That\u2019s easy, we will need a program. My favorites are Open Site Explorer, Ahrefs and MajesticSEO. Here is my Ahrefs link audit for reference:<\/p>\n

Step #5: Check Website Performance<\/h3>\n

Website performance is also a contributing factor to evaluate a website\u2019s SEO.<\/p>\n

Actually, SEO is not just about making content and optimizing it for search engines. It\u2019s way above that. It\u2019s the process of optimizing pages for the visitors first, and then search engines.<\/p>\n

Every search engine wants to deliver the best user experience. Website performance means too many things. There are so many things that need to be focused in order to maintain a great performance. Some of them are:<\/p>\n

1. Page Load Time \u2013 Lower is better. You might look here how to speed up a website<\/a>.
\n2. Total Page Size \u2013 Lower is better for this too.
\n3. Total Number of Request \u2013 It should be the minimum.<\/p>\n

Now let\u2019s see how to have this site’s performance checked. There are lots of tools available for free but I would recommend\u00a0GTmetrix<\/a>. So head over there and perform your checkup. We should have the target to score over 90 in both page speed grade and slow grade. And here is my result:<\/p>\n

\"Latest<\/a><\/p>\n

Google Toolbar PageRank \u2013 Why Didn\u2019t I Mention it?<\/strong><\/p>\n

On October 2013, Matt Cutts announced there won\u2019t be a pagerank update in 2013 – but then, it updated on the 6th of December of the same\u00a0year. Since then, we haven\u2019t seen any more update yet.On October 6,\u00a02014, Google\u2019s John Mueller said:<\/p>\n

We\u2019ll probably not\u2026be updating it \u00a0[PageRank] going forward, at least in the Toolbar PageRank.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

He mentioned, probably Google will not be updating toolbar pagerank anymore. So it\u2019s likely dead to the SEO\u00a0industry.<\/p>\n

Now, we shouldn’t use it to evaluate the SEO\u00a0of a website. Why? Because almost a year passed, but the pageranks are still the same as before. I\u2019m sure a lot of things have changed in all the websites from the past year, so the pagerank they are showing is not\u00a0presently accurate.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m pretty sure you wouldn’t want\u00a0to use any inaccurate info to evaluate a website.<\/p>\n
