Identifying potential issues and correcting them quickly is always better than fixing them after they cause major problems.\u00a0 That\u2019s why I suggest being proactive and conducting SEO link audits periodically.\u00a0 I also suggest one as part of your planning for any new Internet marketing services.<\/p>\n<p>In my experience, the proper way to conduct an SEO link audit is influenced by the primary purpose for the information it will reveal:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do you simply want a general overview of the website\u2019s link status? In other words, are you looking for information that can be used in planning future Internet marketing and\/or link building campaigns?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Are you trying to identify the strongest and weakest portions of your website?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Do you want to see how your site stacks up against the competition in your niche (competition analysis)?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Has your website\u2019s traffic dropped precipitously?\u00a0 Has it been penalized by the search engines, either by being ranked lower in the SERPs or by being de-indexed?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Are you trying to identify problematic inbound or internal links for general clean-up purposes and to prevent future SEO issues?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For example, we would evaluate a site\u2019s backlinks when we are conducting an SEO link audit intended to identify why the site\u2019s traffic has suddenly hit the skids.\u00a0 We would use the same strategy to discover why a site has been penalized by Google or another search engine.<\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/seo-hacker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/SEO-Tools.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-7158 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/seo-hacker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/SEO-Tools.jpeg\" alt=\"SEO Tools\" width=\"307\" height=\"325\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 307px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 307\/325;\" \/><\/a>Tools for Checking Backlinks<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve obtained excellent SEO link audit results by using <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/webmasters\/tools\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Google Webmaster Tools<\/a>.\u00a0 Many SEO experts use it to analyze a site\u2019s incoming links.<\/p>\n<p>The Webmaster Tools \u201cunnatural links\u201d warnings help when you\u2019re trying to avoid search engine penalties for inappropriate links.\u00a0 And if a site has already been penalized, I use Webmaster Tools to examine the incoming links the site acquired shortly before the penalty hit.\u00a0 Similarly, Webmaster Tools can be used to try to identify the cause(s) of a sudden drop-off in your website\u2019s traffic.\u00a0 That\u2019s especially helpful right after a major algorithm update.<\/p>\n<p>Other well-regarded options available for checking a site\u2019s incoming links include <a title=\"Link Research Tools\" href=\"http:\/\/www.linkresearchtools.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Link Research Tools<\/a>, <a title=\"Open Site Explorer\" href=\"http:\/\/www.opensiteexplorer.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Open Site Explorer<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.moz.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Moz<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.majesticseo.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Majestic SEO<\/a>, and <a title=\"Ahrefs\" href=\"http:\/\/ahrefs.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Ahrefs<\/a>.\u00a0 Each of these tools (including Webmaster Tools) will create a list of backlinks and provide some helpful metrics.\u00a0 At the bare minimum, the information I look for includes the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The specific URLs that link to your site<\/li>\n<li>The page(s) on your site that each of these URLs link to<\/li>\n<li>The anchor text used by each incoming link<\/li>\n<li>Whether each incoming link is follow or no-follow<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Danger Signs<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/seo-hacker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Warning.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-7155 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/seo-hacker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Warning.jpg\" alt=\"Warning\" width=\"290\" height=\"290\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 290px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 290\/290;\" \/><\/a>Relevant incoming links from other sites in your industry can improve your website\u2019s search engine rankings and create more traffic.\u00a0 However, other types of incoming links can do exactly the opposite.\u00a0 These inbound links can negatively affect your SEO and Internet marketing campaigns, not to mention your site\u2019s overall status with the search engines.<\/p>\n<p>There are several danger signs to watch for while you\u2019re examining the backlink list created by one of the tools I mentioned above.\u00a0 Four of the most dangerous ones according to me are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Links from websites that trigger a malware or virus warning when you enter their URLs into your browser<\/li>\n<li>Links from websites plastered with unrelated links (\u201cspam sites\u201d)<\/li>\n<li>Links from websites with \u201cquestionable\u201d content (search engines frown on links from sites with topics like pornography, terrorism tactics, online gambling and such)<\/li>\n<li>Links from websites that haven\u2019t been indexed by the search engines<\/li>\n<li>Backlinks from any of these sites can be toxic.\u00a0 A thorough SEO link audit can find them and allow you pursue their removal<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Unless the problem is immediately obvious, manually examine each of the links on your backlink list.\u00a0 Don\u2019t automatically seek removal of all low-quality links \u2013 some of them may be highly relevant to your site and come from websites on the upswing.\u00a0 In the future, they may become an important source of traffic.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, I\u2019d request the removal of links from any of the four \u201cdanger sign\u201d types of sites mentioned above.\u00a0 I\u2019d do this as quickly as possible, before your site crashes and burns because of them.<\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Summing Up \u2026<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p>I hope that this Internet Marketing Guide will help you understand the importance of an SEO link audit and how you can take steps to improve your website\u2019s link profile.\u00a0 It can also reveal existing SEO issues, some of which could be quite serious. \u00a0Once you take appropriate action with regard to the information revealed by a thorough SEO link audit, your SEO and Internet marketing campaigns should be more successful.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I firmly believe a thorough Internet marketing audit would benefit every website engaged in Internet marketing.\u00a0 In particular, conducting a link audit periodically would be even better.
